Geneva: CNDH takes part in the interactive dialogue of the HRC 47th session on the protection of women's rights

The National Human Rights Council (CNDH), represented by Mrs. Amina El Messaoudi, CNDH member, participated, on June 29, 2021, in the interactive dialogue on the protection of women’s rights as part of the 47th session of the Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva.

Mrs. El Messaoudi congratulated Ms. Dubravka Šimonović, United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences, for choosing rape as the subject of her thematic report submitted to the HRC during the pandemic.

She also highlighted legislative and institutional progress in Morocco that ensure better protection of women's rights against all forms of violence, including rape.

In this regard, the CNDH notes the recourse of certain courts to case law to guarantee better protection of women and girls against rape.

Despite this progress, the CNDH considers that several laws must be amended, because no provision addresses marital rape and a number of rape culprits still escape justice.

Mrs. El Messaoudi also shed light on the CNDH actions conducted with NGOs to deconstruct the speeches that prevent women from being heard, by giving a voice to those who have decided to break the silence and witness acts of rape.

In addition, the CNDH continues contributing to the advocacy of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), on women's rights, for the participation of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) in international forums, including the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.

The CNDH also reiterates its recommendation calling to include in the definition of rape and the penal code, all forms of sexual assault regardless of the sex of the victim and the rapist, their relationship or their status.
