Mr. El Haiba Elected Member of Committee on Human Rights

At the end of the twenty eighth meeting of States Parties of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Mr. Mahjoub El Haiba was elected by acclamation a member of the Committee on Human Rights.

Mr. El Haiba, currently Secretary General of the Advisory Council on Human Rights, and former member of the Equity and Reconciliation Commission, is professor of political science at the Rabat Law Faculty.

It is worth mentioning that the opening of the meeting of States Parties to the Covenant, the representative of the Philippines, Mr. Hilario Davide Jr., had been elected by acclamation as President. His counterpart from Azerbaijan had been elected vice-chair.

It is recalled that the Committee on Human Rights is an organ composed of 18 independent experts that monitors implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights by States parties. It meets three times a year in New York and Geneva.
