Statement of Mr. Mohamed Ayat at the 10th anniversary of the entry into force of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the entry into force of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPPED), Mr. Mohamed Ayat, Special Advisor to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and Chair of the Committee on Enforced Disappearances, took part in a webinar on the “10th anniversary of the entry into force of the ICPPED: Practical Issues, diplomatic challenges”.

Mr. Ayat underlined that the Kingdom of Morocco had always been one of the four countries to be committed allies to the said Convention. He also paid tribute to the victims’ families and human rights NGOs. These NGOs played a decisive role both in making the whole world and the United Nations aware of the seriousness of the phenomenon of enforced disappearances and also in drafting and negotiating the provisions of the Convention.

The number of States parties of the ICPPED is 63. The Chair of the Committee on ICPPED said that although the goodwill of these States parties, there are still important actions that should be conducted to persuade more countries to contribute in strengthening the fight against impunity in cases of enforced disappearance. These cases may, sometimes, be classified as crimes against humanity.

This online event was organized by the Association Française pour les Nations Unies (AFNU) in partnership with the Centre de recherche sur les droits de l’Homme (CRDH) of the Université Panthéon-Assas Paris II.

Ms. Michelle Bachelet, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Bernard Miyet, President of AFNU and former UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, and Mr. Fabien Penone, Head of the Department for the United Nations, International Organizations, Human Rights and Francophonie at the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs in France participated in this webinar.
