HM the King appoints El Yazami President of National Human Rights Council and Sebbar its SG

Marrakech - HM King Mohammed VI, received, on Thursday at the Royal Palace of Marrakech, Driss El Yazami and Mohammed Sebbar, whom the Sovereign appointed President and Secretary General of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH) respectively.

These appointments come after the promulgation of the Dahir (Royal decree) promoting the Council from a consultative institution into the National Human Rights Council in conformity with international standards, said a statement by the Royal Household.

The CNDH adopts in its organization and practice regional mechanisms for defending and safeguarding Human Rights.

In this respect, HM the King highlighted the importance of these mechanisms in defending and promoting the rights of citizens in all regions of the Kingdom.

The new Dahir also aims to consolidate the autonomy of the Council by expanding its prerogatives in the fields of human rights promotion and protection and to reinforce its pluralism, while taking into account the principles of expertise and specialty in areas relating to human rights concerning the choice of its members.

After paying tribute to the former President and Secretary General in addition to the members for their sincere efforts in completing the Council’s mission, HM the King commended the new President and Secretary General for their distinguished careers and commitment to human rights, effective citizenship and the just causes of the nation.

The Sovereign also called on Driss El Yazami and Mohammed Sebbar to take measures for the establishment of the new composition of the council in order to allow it to carry out the missions assigned to it at the national and regional levels.

The CNDH is tasked with consolidating the achievements made by the Kingdom, under the leadership of HM the King, in terms of the rule of law, progress and democracy and the consolidation of Morocco’s pioneering position at the regional level as well as its international role.
