Mrs. Bouayach kicks off consultations with various stakeholders on migration museum project in Morocco

Mrs. Amina Bouayach, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH), announced the launch of consultations with institutional/non-institutional stakeholders to explore ways to establish a museum of memory and history of migration in Morocco.

This announcement was made at the International Conference organized as part of the sixth session of the Migrant Festival.

Under the slogan Valuing the Heritage of International Migrations, the Festival of Migrant was organized on 27 and 28 October 2023, in Agadir, Morocco, by the CNDH, University Ibn Zohr in Agadir, the Association of Researchers in Migration and Development (known in French as Association des Chercheurs en Migrations et Développement (ACMD)) and the Regional Observatory for Migrations, Spaces and Societies (ORMES).

Within this context, the CNDH Chairperson indicated that "As a national human rights institution, our role extends beyond protecting migrants’ rights. We are dedicated to preserving their memory and promoting its academic and heritage aspects."

Mrs. Bouayach considered that the CNDH’s interest in the heritage of migrations is not an intellectual luxury. Rather it is part of its strategy to continue to implement the Equity and Reconciliation Commission (IER) recommendations related to memory preservation.

CNDH Chairperson also shed light on the Unit for the Preservation of Memory and the Promotion of Moroccan History and its Various Tributaries, established by the CNDH in 2021. She emphasized its importance in promoting research and reflection on questions related to contemporary history and its extent as a mechanism for studying areas of memory preservation in a way that reflects the development and progress process that society is experiencing in its various aspects.

Mr. Mohamed Charef, President of the Regional Human Rights Commission (CRDH) in the Souss-Massa Region and ORMES Director, highlighted that preserving the memory of migrations can be done in several ways, including the production of relevant scientific and historical research, archival preservation operations, collecting testimonies, organizing exhibitions, producing documentaries, etc.

As part of this conference, Ibn Zohr University in Agadir paid tribute to Mrs. Amina Bouayach, in recognition of her numerous contributions to preserving memory and history in its various tributaries.
Researchers and experts interested in migration issues from Morocco, Cameroon, Italy, Tunisia, France, Mauritania, Argentina, South Africa and Niger participated in this event.
