CNDH takes part in NANHRI’s General Meeting in Geneva

The (Moroccan) National Human Right Council (CNDH) took part in the General Meeting of the Network of African National Human Rights Institutions, which took place on Tuesday May 7, 2013, Palais des Nations, Geneva.

The leadership of the International Coordinating Committee of National Institutions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights (ICC) was handed over to the African regional network. The Chairperson of the South African Human Rights Commission and the Chairperson of the Network of African NHRIs took over the leadership of the global NHRI Network during this General meeting.

To avoid dual mandate, it was decided to hand over the leadership of NANHRI to the Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice of Ghana, which was serving as the vice-president of the Network.

Mr. Albert Sasson, Advisor to CNDH President, reaffirmed the Council’s support to the South African commission. He took the opportunity to reiterate CNDH’s call for a new dynamics in the work of the ICC and for the adoption of a triennial road map strategy. This strategy should identify the priority objectives and the necessary financial resources to achieve it, he said.

The Francophone Association of National Human Rights Commissions (AFCNDH), chaired by the (Moroccan) National Human Rights Council, held its meeting on the same day. This meeting was devoted to the adoption of the Association’s activity report 2012. Support provided by the Association to the creation of new national institutions, applying for ICC accreditation and capacity-building for member institutions and their personnel were discussed during this meeting as well.

The integrated strategic plan 2013, which focuses on capacity building, human rights education and training, Universal Periodic Review and the implementation of the plan of action adopted during the last meeting of the Association in 2012 in Casablanca.

These two meetings were held in the sidelines of the 26th session of the ICC, held at the Human Right Council in Geneva, in 2012.
